Hi All,

This is my post as I just received my Kuro today. So I switch right away to Debian as I'm an Ubuntu enthusiast ;)
I've install the Courier-IMAP server and I have some issue when I try to connect to the server through Thunderbird.

Here is the log of the IMAP for my last attempt of connection (the username and password have been changed of course).

Dec 4 21:40:01 KURO-BOX sm-msp-queue[1552]: My unqualified host name (KURO-BOX) unknown; sleeping for retry
Dec 4 21:41:01 KURO-BOX sm-msp-queue[1552]: unable to qualify my own domain name (KURO-BOX) -- using short name
Dec 4 21:45:26 KURO-BOX imaplogin: Connection, ip=[::ffff:192.168.0.4]
Dec 4 21:45:26 KURO-BOX imaplogin: LOGIN: DEBUG: ip=[::ffff:192.168.0.4], command=CAPABILITY
Dec 4 21:45:34 KURO-BOX imaplogin: LOGIN: DEBUG: ip=[::ffff:192.168.0.4], command=LOGIN
Dec 4 21:45:34 KURO-BOX imaplogin: LOGIN: DEBUG: ip=[::ffff:192.168.0.4], username=toto
Dec 4 21:45:34 KURO-BOX imaplogin: LOGIN: DEBUG: ip=[::ffff:192.168.0.4], password=######
Dec 4 21:45:34 KURO-BOX imaplogin: authdaemon: starting client module
Dec 4 21:45:36 KURO-BOX imaplogin: authdaemon: TEMPFAIL - no more modules will be tried
Dec 4 21:45:41 KURO-BOX imaplogin: LOGIN FAILED, ip=[::ffff:192.168.0.4]
Dec 4 21:45:47 KURO-BOX imaplogin: LOGIN: DEBUG: ip=[::ffff:192.168.0.4], command=LOGOUT
Dec 4 21:45:47 KURO-BOX imaplogin: LOGOUT, ip=[::ffff:192.168.0.4]

Did someone managed to install and make an Courier-IMAP server works ?

I'm totally clueless in IMAP server actually, so any help will be so greatfully appreciate.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Regards.

Shadowing.

Looks like you don't have authentication setup yet.

I don't have courier running on a Kuro Box, but I do have courier on my mail server.

Edit /etc/courier/authdaemonrc and set "authmodulelist" to the authentication methods that you want. For example

Code:
authmodulelist="authpam"

sets it up to use pam. Pam is already installed on your system, it just needs to be configured, but that's another issue. :)

Hint: you'll need have a file called "/etc/pam.d/imap"

My mail server doesn't have a lot of users and all of them have real user accounts. So I just set everything up to use the standard login password. My /etc/pam.d/imap file looks like this:

Code:
auth                    required               pam_unix.so      nullok
account               required               pam_unix.so
password            required               pam_unix.so
session               required               pam_unix.so

Depending on your needs, you'll likely want to do something different.

Hope this helps

ed.

Thanks GreyBear,

The setup you've mentioned are already in place... :cry:
But maybe you point out something that is not clear for me. My IMAP have very few user so I set up to match the user account.
Thus my question is the following;
Did the user password for an IMAP account the same as the user account of the system ?
Do you know I can setup the account and password of courier-imap users ? if it's possible ?

Thanks a lot for the help... still looking around then.

Cheers.

Mine is setup so that system passwords are used for everything. So when a user changes her system password it's also changed for imap, pop3, etc.

You can set things up so that courier uses a different password, but then you'd have to configure courier (or pam) to use something like LDAP or a mysql database to store the account/password information.

Good luck.

Greybear,

Thanks for the info... in fact I realized that I didn't create the maildir for the user... so now I don't have anymore timeout while I'm trying to connect to the IMAP with the user and password.
However, the behavior of the server is still odd. I can send mail but I cannot receive them.
Looking at the log it's seems that I've got some domain error

Dec 6 17:21:02 KURO-BOX sm-msp-queue[6874]: unable to qualify my own domain name (KURO-BOX) -- using short name

I don't get all this domain and host stuff, do you have any clue on this.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers.

I found the following page to be extremely helpful last year when I put a mail system on my Kuro.:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php? ... sc&start=0

If you also want pop3 build courier-pop3. It was cake to setup also.

Thanks again Dave.for the link it works great now...however I have one question about the following.
Every 10 minutes approx. I received this kind of email.

Cron <antoine@BLUEWATER> $HOME/bin/getmyemailnow (this is the title !)

Quote:
procmail: Error while writing to "/var/log/procmailrc.log"
procmail: [1965] Sat Dec 8 12:40:08 2007
procmail: Assigning "LOGABSTRACT=all"
procmail: Assigning "LASTFOLDER=/home/antoine/Maildir/new/1197135608.1965_1.BLUEWATER"

So obviously this is not a big deal since I received the mails, but why PROCMAIL is not able to write in the log....
Hummm maybe I just realize that it should be a right issue of the /var/log/ folder.

I'll look in that direction and let you know... sometime writting the problem help to think :lol:

Cheers.

I would assume permissions, what are the permissions on the log file and what user is procmail running as?

Stick with it, I have my Kuro running courier-IMAP, Postfix, Fetchmail, Spamassasin, ClamAV as well as Samba and NFS.

Works like a charm to my remote webserver running RoundCube webmail.

Just trying to get Courier-IMAP and RoundCube to work with quota's, does courier-IMAP report free space correctly if I was to use HD quotas?

I have postfix spamassasin clamav courier-IMAP and it works a treet with a dtndns name.

I also found that install pdnsd helped speend up things (DNS Caching) and imapproxy helped reduce IMAP cpu loads.

Imapproxy does not work out of the box though.

I setup Courier to only lissend on the localhost and used Imapproxy chrooted as an aditional security layer.

I now have RoundCube webmail running on a webserver host IMAPing over TLS to my Kuro at home. Works really well, and suprisingly fast.

after recking my kuro install, I have just replaced it with debian etch running 2.6.18 and exim4 + courier + SA + ClamAV works like a charm, real ease to setup.
