I recently wiped and reinstalled Debian on my KuroBox-HG at home with the system image found here:

My question is, do the kernel updates need to be applied incrementally, or should the latest kernel build install without a need for all prior updates?

You only need to untar the kernel update that you want.

Some people have reported issues with the 2.6.20 kernels when using loader.o. I haven't converted to uboot yet, so I'm happily using 2.6.18.1-mh7 with no problems.
