If this has been discussed before, I apologize. The search criteria I used didn't seem to bring anything up on this.

I was wondering how hard is it to apply a kernel patch if one is using U-Boot. For instance, like if you wish to go from 2.6.22.2 to 2.6.22.3.

Thanks!

Since you are using a vanilla kernel, there are no patchsets to go hunting for, unless you have something in particular in mind (like some special driver not in the kernel already), so everything you need is at http://kernel.org/. The patchset is right there on the front page, but since I am lazy, I would download the already patched source like this:

Code:
# cd /usr/src
# wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.23.1.tar.bz2
# tar xjf linux-2.6.23.1.tar.bz2
# cp linux/.config linux-2.6.23.1
# ln -sf linux-2.6.23.1 linux
# cd linux
# make oldconfig # might be some new things, I take defaults usually
# make menuconfig # if you want to select different things
# make uImage && make modules && make modules_install
# # (do you need a new dtb file here -- I don't know -- compare the dts file with the previous version)
# cd /boot
# mv vmlinux.UBoot vmlinux.UBoot-2.6.22.1
# cp /usr/src/linux/arch/powerpc/boot/uImage vmlinux.UBoot
# # cross fingers
# shutdown -r now

If you want to actually patch the 2.6.22.1 kernel to the 2.6.23.1 kernel, I suggest reading at http://kernelnewbies.org/ (that's where I would go ).
Good luck
