Why don't you compile your own mldonkey?

After seeing this thread I did a quick emerge on mldonkey (gentoo rawks!) and have been playing with it, very cool. Now I can have it plugging away 24/7 on the kuro, which is great for those long slow downloads.

The way I am running it is within screen for a regular user... then I use putty to tunnel in so I can point my web browser at localhost:4080 ... should work great externally (from work) and pretty secure too.

Anyone here run it using the init.d/ script? I tried that at first but it didn't work all that great, do you have to do a chmod on the p2p user dir?

Any chance of a quick howto on how you use putty, I have mldonkey working on my kuro, but cant access it from a browser working on the PC/MAC. I know its running because if I run lynx on the kuro, I can see its running fine.

Thanks

Sure leslie its pretty easy ...

Just go into the putty configuration options and look under SSH -> Tunnels. Under there look under "Port forwarding." From there you just add 4080 in the source port, and localhost:4080 in the destination port (the destination is the address that you would use on the kuro to get to it, this could also be other IPs on your home network if you wanted.) Then connect to your kuro and login... that should be it.

In your browser type in http://localhost:4080 and you should see it.

Tunneling is f*cking cool... I got it setup so my only open port on my home router is 22 and remotely I can do all of these things:

- Stream music from Slimserver
- Administer my home router
- Run webmin
- Mount my samba shares (I have plink running as a service so I can always have K: mounted as my home kuro drive on my work computer!)

Its kind of like your own miniature VPN, very cool.

How could you install the masked mldonkey client?

I'm a gentoo/linux newbie - may be it's an easy answer but I don't know?

TIA

RTFM, then ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" emerge edonkey
Then RTFM again. Then look into http://forums.gentoo.org. Then RTFM again.

I have mldonkey running on my linkstation now. All seems to work fine, except that the filenames of completed downloads are not correct. The files show up in the incomming folder, but are named like dl-1, dl-2 and so on.

Does anybody know what is going wrong? I searched on the internet, but I didn't find an answer.

TIA Phinx
