Just another update: With help from Thecus in Taiwan finally got my HDD recognized. Excellent customer service.

My fingers are still crossed that the new KuroBox gets released soon...

try the n2100 as it has DIMM slots, but its designed for 2 HDD which might make it to big for you.

Did you get it?

I keep thinking about getting one, I did see a guide on deboras about installing Debian on the 2100?

Anyone brave enough to try it on the 1200?

I would definitely get one once I can install my own OS

Well I have the box up and running.

Overall not bad but I ran into a couple of significant problems

1. Box defaults to 192.168.1.100 even if you have a DNS server
I already had a NAS with this address so I had to turn that one off until I could change the box to use DNS

2. The software to find and configure the box did not like XP Professional. I had to install the software on a different machine running Windows XP to get it to work.

Overall the box is pretty nice. Good mix of features.

There are a number of headers that could be serial ports. I found a four pin header that looked like serial but I could not get it to work.

There is a way to install module that can extend the software I am looking into how to do this to see if I can turn on telnet.

This will probably go slow because I do not have much time to play with the box.
Next step is probably to remove the hard drive and look at the contents.

Great work Javascout!

The hardware I've found to be quite good. It's way more silent than the KuroBoxHG and in a smaller enclosure too, but the software on it leaves a lot to be desired. For example I have my music folder and photo folders hidden so why the heck do the icons still appear on the front-page... This even extends to the USBfolder and the eSATAfolder, the only person who should see (or be able to navigate to) these are me and me only. And that's just the basic software interface.

I just wish I had the time to play with the box myself but work commitments mean I have to use it as it is for the time being. In the meantime keep up the good work! I'm intrigued as to what this little baby can do.

Edit (02/28/07): Just to point out how bad the Thecus software is on the N1200 - I've got a folder set to non-public mode requiring a username and password. If I navigate to the folder over my own network it asks for the username and password, but navigate to it via the internet and you get access to the folder!

Excelent information, whats the MPC8347 @266mHZ performance compared to the PPC @ 266?

There is a guide to installing debian on the N2100 floating arround, do you think it would transfer to the N1200?

Debian instructions for N2100 will be based on ARM processor would and will need to be translated for use with the PowerPC.

As far as performance goes I would expect it to be very similar to the Kurobox HG as the underlying processor is the same 603e core running at the same speed.

I was hoping they had used a slightly quicker processor.

too bad the n2100 is that expensive (360 €here)....

but it would have 600 Mhz Xscale....

well..we will see if it is too tempting...timtimred talks about nothing else lately in the IRC...

I was a little worried after reading this post and not seeing my hard disks during the install process. There is a bug in the windows installer that ships with it (on my one anyhoo) that resulted in the hard disks not being displayed in the installer. After completing the installer they showed up in the web interface and everything appears to work!

The issue with mine was that the HD did appear, but when you selected format disk the progress window would show it doing so and then it would eventually show 'format failed'. Thecus issued me with an updated installer and it then formatted okay. Since then the unit's been 'spot on', with just the quirky web interface being the poor point (so far).

I was wondering if we know the answer to this yet... Earlier, someone had posted that they expected the 1200 to be several times faster than the Kuro HG.

Does anyone know what hardware is inside the new DS107 series from Synology, and if there's progress on getting a real linux on it? I'm still looking for a better next-gen box than the kuro pro...
